As Mumford and Sons finally arrives, here are the biggest bands who’ve never played Tampa Bay

Radio 1 Big Weekend: Sheeran finished writing the song at the funeral. He sings with his eyes closed and while rapping out a beat with his knuckles on the body of his guitar. And finally he plays Photograph. Now Sheeran pops down from stage for a chat. He tells me that Benedict Cumberbatch will be starring in the video for Sing, doing some hip hop dancing. The singer coolly works the room, indulging in smiley table-hopping. Not bad for one kid and his guitar. Nine days later I meet Sheeran again. What, I ask, are the dominant themes that emerged during those interviews?

The backdrop was a simple set-up, with three simple large windows that scaled the stage with only a plain sheet behind. There were no digital graphics flashing on stacked screens and lights were a classic, powerful gold. It was a subtle detail, and those paying more attention to the music might not have taken note of seconds-long set change. During arguably the most powerful half of a Mumford and Sons song, the steel beams making up the floor-to-ceiling windows started flaming.

As Ben Lovett was slamming on his piano keys and Mumford was singing so hard one could see the strain in his throat, the fire was the only light the entire stage had.

An easy way for a relatively unknown or unpopular actor, politician, or musician to experience a sudden increase in popularity is to appear on a certain show.

So sat right there on one sofa is 6 of the most brilliant minds in the Alt-Folk music movement taking over the reins from Jeffrey Lewis and Adam Green. Only three of them however are Geniuses Genii? And I know that it’s not just us simpletons that enjoy Laura’s seemlessly never-ending talents Johnny Flynn’s first album is called A Larum, apparently because of it’s Middle English translation into “alarm”, however it surprisingly is an anagram of a certain Laura M.

Coincedence, I think not. Although this is not something I will complain too much about as I must admit I prefer the more mature sound it has created on their soon-to-be-released album The First Days of Spring. Even the creator of comic book folk himself, Jeffrey Lewis, is an avid admirer of Laura’s talents, the two dueting on the most unexpected cover of Eminem’s Brain Damage.

So there it is, the greatest talents in the folk scene and what do they all share in common? A love for the wise-beyond-her-years Laura Marling. I unsuprisingly find myself also mystified by the beauty and raw talent of someone so young Just realised that rhymes I’m half way there!

YMMV You’ve never even heard of the first place guy. When the person who comes second or worse in a Reality Show gets more out of it than the winner, be it in post-show popularity, sales, endorsement cash, or simply not looking like as much of a jackass on national television. For the talent-based shows, the reason can be described easily. When you win, you’re hot, and the producers of the show want to capitalize on that.

This leads to getting pushed too fast and too hard. With singers, it might involve churning out a sub-par album to capitalize on their star power.

British festivals are an acquired taste. Firstly there’s a huge risk of rain, which will only lead to your tent getting flooded and too much time spent trying not to fall over in the mud.

Jake Saunders Grammy-winning folk rock icons Mumford and Sons recently announced their plan to take time off as a band in hopes of just “hanging out and having no commitments or pressure or anything like that,” keyboardist Ben Lovett told Rolling Stone this past Saturday. Its follow-up, Babel scored the group their big Grammy win as Album of the Year. And after non-stop tours and appearances it seems Mumford is ready for a long lasting vacation. Mumford and Sons are arguably one of the biggest bands on either side of the pond these days, they hit it big a few years ago with their “alternative and indie folk” sound. There are plenty of bands that do what Mumford and Sons do and are technically better, but that’s never been a defining trait of music listening patterns over the last 75 years.

Apart from a few songs on the album, that’s pretty much how it goes. There’s the lead singer’s voice, which is pleasant at first, it’s even soothing and then as the album progresses it becomes gradually annoying. One realizes he’s not the best singer in the world, not that this is a problem, witness Bob Dylan for 50 years, but his voice becomes annoying because it’s technically “perfect” throughout the entire album.

If there’s not some form of auto-tune on his voice, well, it would be shocking, but they hide it by having him “growl” through some of the songs, giving it an “authentic” feel because he’s antiestablishment or something. For the most part, the songs are indistinguishable from each other and the lyrics are nonsense. Their single “I Will Wait” is an onslaught of acoustic guitar and banjo, from the first second of the song they never give up.

What the lyrics are about is anyone’s guess, suffice to say he’s waiting for someone. There are titles to songs that you could assume give a hint as to what the songs are about and one could go and seek out their lyrics online, but that takes the fun out of trying to decipher it for yourself. But it’s safe to say after two or three listens, they’re still up in the air.

Indeed, there has been so much hype in the run-up to the launch of the second album from Birdy even her name sounds just a little fake that by the time we meet I am expecting a precocious and glossier younger UK sister of Taylor Swift or Selena Gomez. She is hiding — like any ordinary teenager — behind a wall of extension-free hair. It is almost impossible to believe that this slight, hesitant girl could be the same person whose singing voice entranced the 80, spectators in the Olympic stadium last year and dazzled a worldwide TV audience estimated at one billion.

What did that feel like?
