SBMM is a system used in a number of online multiplayer games, designed with the intention of balancing out players of different skill level in the hope of a more enjoyable experience for all. However, while the intention of the system is often well placed, the implementation is often not, and can lead to games becoming increasibgly frustrating, as players will find it a lot more challenging to play well, if all their opponents are at a similar skill level. For a casual game, this is often not ideal, so while a competitive and ranked game – for example Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, or Call of Duty’s ranked playlist – may be suited to a SBMM approach, games such as Fortnite, played for a more casual experience, or typically not. Worryingly for many players then, the recent announcement from Epic Games that SBMM was being considered for Fortnite, worried a number of high profile fans of the game. Part of the fun with a giant player FFA is that you don’t know if the next guy you run into will be a total noob or a God. I hope it isn’t implemented, personally. Year one players are significantly advantaged for a number of reasons when it comes to having a high DTR Trueskill level, as compared to their year two counterparts. As I had mentioned in the original post, I am all for having DTR Trueskill more difficult to obtain because of the introduction of SBMM ; my fear lies in the fact that it makes certain playlists such as Rumble near impossible.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll get the correct member of staff to give you a reply to your query. When this hits, we’ll definitely look at the data we have on hand and decide how to move from there. The problem with TrueSkill is that we don’t analyze the data from each game, only the aggregates provided by the API when you collect your stats. The Destiny API only returns a win for the first place finisher under those aggregated stats and doesn’t record join in progress match ups.

This is different for Elo, where we track every player in Destiny. We’ve only recently implemented this, TrueSkill is something we have the potential of revising in the near future. We’ve got a ton of data, but we need to make sure we can still make good use of it all before we jump on those changes. Can I just point out that you’re not actually? You’re only ranked XXX on a site. We and other stat tracking sites do not have every player in our database so you cannot be XXX in the world.

Your Reward Level starts at Unranked, and each win earns you progress towards the next level. Each Reward Level requires 10 wins to unlock, and they are sequential – you unlock Silver rewards after Bronze, Gold after Silver, and so on.
